Guy Pratt came of age just as bass playing became sexy. Having dallied with punk legend Sylvain Sylvain, Pratt suddenly found himself on Top of the Pops and supporting David Bowie with smooth Australian outfit Icehouse. He became bass player to the stars, crawling from studio to bar and hotel to stadium Portakabin with the likes of Pink Floyd, Robert Palmer, Womack &Womack and Bryan Ferry. Guy has recorded with everyone from Madonna and Michael Jackson to McFly. He was in The Smiths for a week, and has travelled through customs in a wheelchair after a flight with Jimmy Page. Following the success of his live show at the 2005 Edinburgh Festival and the subsequent sell out tour of Australia, Guy Pratt’s narrates his bestselling book, My Bass and Other Animals, a witty, revealing but heartfelt memoir of life at the pointy end of the music business. When not playing with David Gilmour or Bryan Ferry, he continues to take the show around the world. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Guy Pratt. This audiobook seeks to take the listener on a journey. Starting with the history of the violin, it moves on to offer various lessons and techniques to help those new to the violin learn to play the instrument. It also seeks to teach something new to those already seasoned in violin playing. The violin is an instrument with a very long history. The first known string instrument using a bow was called the ravanastron and was created in India thousands of years ago. More recently, the violin was an instrument born of the fiddle, rebab, and the lira da braccio. Once considered a lowly instrument, the violin started to gain status when, among other things, it was used in operas by famous Italian composer Claudio Monteverdi. The violin is certainly one of the more well-known instruments used in ´´Classical” music. It has a familiar shape, like that of the cello and viola, except it is smaller. Its flat, pear-shaped wooden body is minimally decorated with purfling and perforated with F-holes. Great skill and dedication went into perfecting the instrument. Some of the greatest violin makers included Antonio Stradivarius as well as members of the Guarneri family, especially del Gesu. It was during the time in which these and other luthiers were creating violins in Italy that violin-making reached its zenith. In fact, today, many luthiers still use the patterns created by some of these craftsmen to make their instruments.Skill and dedication is required to not only create violins, but also to play the instrument. Starting with beginning lessons using simple songs from the Müller-Rusch violin method book, How to Play Violin progresses to the more challenging exercises like the Rode Caprices. The audiobook has not only musical exercises and examples, but also pieces and excerpts by Bach, Schubert, and Beethoven, among others. Lastly, a very brief discussion on playing techniques during the various eras of ´´Classical” music is given, a 1. Language: English. Narrator: Olivia Lauer. Penguin presents the complete unabridged downloadable audiobook edition of Gone by Min Kym, read by Rebecca Yeo. ´All my life my Stradivarius had been waiting for me, as I had been waiting for her....´ At seven years old, Min Kym was a prodigy, the youngest ever pupil at the Purcell School of Music. At 11 she won her first international prize. She worked with many violins, waiting for the day she would play ´the one´. At 21 she found it: a rare 1696 Stradivarius, perfectly suited to her build and temperament. Her career soared. She recorded the Brahms concerto, and a world tour was planned. Then, in a train station café, her violin was stolen. In an instant her world collapsed. She descended into a terrifying limbo land, unable to play another note. This is Min´s extraordinary story - of a young woman staring into the void, wondering who she was, who she had been. It is a story of isolation and dependence, of love, loss and betrayal, and of the intense, almost human bond that a musician has with their instrument. Above all it´s a story of hope through a journey back to music. Includes music from Gone: The Album. Gone: The Album has been released on Warner Classics and is available for streaming and download and as a physical CD. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Rebecca Yeo.
