Pixies veröffentlichten im Herbst dieses Jahres ihr neues und achtes Studioalbum und starteten zeitgleich mit dem europäischen Teil ihrer Welttournee, die die wegweisenden Indie-Rocker im Oktober auch nach Berlin,Köln und München führte. Mainz steht im nächsten Jahr fest in ihrem Konzertkalender. Von den Pixies ist man gewohnt, dass sie keine fertige Setlist dabei haben, sondern Black Francis (Gesang, Gitarre), Joey Santiago (Gitarre), Paz Lenchantin (Bass) und David Lovering (Drums) bereiten bei ihren Proben rund 90 Songs aus allen Phasen der Bandgeschichte vor.Jeder Auftritt soll anders werden als alle anderen, die Abfolge und Auswahl der Stücke erfolgt ganz spontan während der Konzerte. Dabei wird Frontman Black Francis dem Mischer, dem Lichtmenschen und den Mitgliedern jeweils kurzfristig vorgeben, welcher Song als nächstes gespielt wird. Zudem legt die Band Pixies keine großen Wert auf viele Worte zwischen den Stücken und konzentriert sich viel mehr auf ihre elektrisierende Musik, dann steht einem großartigen Konzert nichts mehr im Weg.Das Quartett greift auf ein großes und vielfältiges Repertoire zurück: Seit der ersten Phase in den späten 80er sind die Pixies eine der einflussreichsten Bands überhaupt und die Liste der Musikerinnen und Musiker, die sich auf sie berufen, ist lang. Sie haben den Weg für Grunge (Nirvana und Pearl Jam waren Fans) genauso geebnet wie für hymnische Sounds (Radiohead beziehen sich heute noch darauf) oder vielfältigen Indie-Rock zwischen TV On The Radio und Weezer. Der starke dynamische Wechsel, der so ausgeprägt erst mit ihnen im Rock Einzug hielt, ist ihr Markenzeichen, das auch das konzertante Erlebnis prägt.Zuletzt arbeiteten sie diesen Winter, nach ihrer Reunion im Jahr 2004, mit dem Produzenten Tom Dalgety an der neuen Platte. Ihre stärksten Momente aber, haben die Pixies auf der Bühne. Es ist immer wieder bemerkenswert und besonders erfreulich, dass viele internationale und nationale Künstler ihren Weg nach Mainz finden. Durch eine Annonce (gesucht war ein Bassist, der sowohl auf die Hardcore-Punk-Band Hu¨sker Du¨ als auch auf die Folk-Gruppe Peter, Paul and Mary stehen sollte) schlossen sich die Bassistin Kim Deal und der Drummer Dave Lovering an. Während eines Konzertes im Vorprogramm der Throwing Muses fielen sie ihrem späteren Manager GarySmith auf, der mit ihnen ein Demo-Band mit siebzehn Stücken produzierte (The Purple Tape). Dieses Demo-Band geriet auch in die Hände der Plattenfirma 4AD, die sie daraufhin unter Vertrag nahm. Aus acht Stücken des Demos entstand 1987 die erste Veröffentlichung der Pixies, die EP Come On Pilgrim.Im Jahre 1988 entstand schließlich das erste Album der Band, Surfer Rosa, produziert von Steve Albini. Surfer Rosa enthält den heute sicherlich berühmtesten Song der Band, Where Is My Mind?, und gilt rückblickend als eine der wichtigsten Rockplatten der 1980er. Beide Alben wurden bei späteren Veröffentlichungen auf einer CD zusammengefasst.1989 erschien das Album Doolittle, welches einen weniger rohen Sound aufwies als der Vorgänger und einen relativ großen kommerziellen Erfolg hatte. Mit den darauf enthaltenen Singles Here Comes Your Man und Monkey Gone to Heaven erzielte die Band ihre ersten Top-10-Hits in Großbritannien. Nach Doolittle begannen jedoch auch vermehrte Solo-Aktivitäten der Bandmitglieder: Black Francis spielte Solokonzerte, und Kim Deal gru¨ndete mit Tanya Donelly von den Throwing Muses die Band The Breeders. Es entstanden vermehrt Konflikte durch den nun immer größer werdenden Einfluss von Francis auf das Songwriting.Er veröffentlichte einen Song für den Film Pump up the Volume, Wave of Mutilation (U.K. Surf), der auch auf dem Soundtrack enthalten ist. Das folgende Pixies-Album aus dem Jahr 1990, Bossanova, wurde komplett von Black Francis geschrieben. Die Konflikte in der Band wuchsen stetig, und nachdem 1991 Trompe Le Monde veröffentlicht worden war, machte die Band im Anschluss an eine aufreibende Tournee als Vorgruppe für U2 eine zeitlich unbegrenzte Pause, während der die jeweiligen Soloprojekte im Vordergrund stehen sollten. 1993 erklärte Black Francis dann ohne das Wissen der anderen Bandmitglieder in einem Interview das Ende der Pixies.Später sollte er wiederholt äußern, dass diese Entscheidung ein Fehler gewesen sei, da ausgerechnet zu dem Zeitpunkt, als die Pixies vorerst von der Bühne verschwanden, die Hochzeit des Grunge begann - also eines Musikstiles, für den die Pixies als ein wichtiger Wegbereiter gelten, von dessen Erfolg sie aber zunächst nicht profitieren konnten.Nach der Auflösung folgten noch vier Platten mit teilweise unveröffentlichten, jedoch nicht neu produzierten Songs. Trotz dieser geringen Anzahl an veröffentlichtem Material hatten die Pixies einen nachhaltigen Einfluss auf die Musikszene der damaligen Zeit. Die britische Musikzeitschrift NME hat das Pixies-Album Doolittle zum zweitbesten Album überhaupt gekürt. Black Francis spielte nach der Trennung solo als Frank Black und mit den Catholics. Kim Deal konzentrierte sich auf ihre beiden Bands Breeders und The Amps. David Lovering spielte eine kurze Zeit bei Cracker, wechselte dann aber das Metier und arbeitete als Zauberkünstler unter dem Namen The Scientific Phenomenalist. Joey Santiago produzierte Musik für Film und Fernsehen undspielte weiterhin in seiner Band The Martinis, die er mit seiner Frau Linda Mallari 1993 gründete.Im Jahre 2003 schlossen sich die Pixies wieder zusammen und begannen im April 2004 zu touren. Die US-Konzerte waren weitgehend ausverkauft, obwohl die Band seit zwölf Jahren keine Platte mehr veröffentlicht hatte. Außerdem traten sie im Sommer 2004 bei mehreren europäischen Festivals auf. Im Juni 2004 veröffentlichten die Pixies exklusiv über iTunes den Song Bam Thwok.Am 14. Juni 2013 gab die Band u¨ber ihre Facebook-Seite bekannt, dass Kim Deal die Pixies verlassen hat. Sie wurde zunächst durch Kim Shattuck vertreten, bevor Paz Lenchantin an ihre Stelle trat. Am 28. Juni 2013 erschien die Single Bagboy. Zwischen September 2013 und März 2014 veröffentlichte die Band neues Material auf den drei Platten EP1, EP2 und EP3. Die Tracks der drei EPs wurden im April 2014 auf dem Album IndieCindy gesammelt veröffentlicht. Zwei Jahre danach, am 6. Juli 2016, kündigten die Pixies über diverse soziale Medien das Erscheinen ihres nächsten Albums Head Carrier an. Dieses erschien am 30. September des gleichen Jahres. In einem Interview mit BBC Radio 6 Music grenzte Black Francis Head Carrier vonden letzten beiden Alben ab. Ihm zufolge habe es weniger Glätte als Trompe le Monde und Indie Cindy, sei einfacher gestrickt und habe wieder mehr von der Spritzigkeit ihrer ersten Alben wie Doolittle.Im Juni 2019 erschien der Song On Graveyard Hill als Vorbote zum im September desselben Jahres erscheinenden Album Beneath The Eyrie. Die Veröffentlichung wird von einem umfangreichen Podcast-Projekt begleitet. Über die gesamte Produktionszeit hatten die Bandmitglieder ein gesondertes Podcast-Studio, wo sie Eindrücke der Sessions wiedergaben.Die Pixies gelten als wegweisende Band für Grunge, Indie- und Alternative Rock. Viele Künstler, darunter David Bowie, Radiohead, PJ Harvey, U2, Nirvana, The Cardigans, The Strokes, TV on the Radio, Weezer, Spoon und Pavement, nannten die Band als wichtigen Einfluss oder äußerten ihre Bewunderung. KurtCobain verließ in London sogar eines seiner eigenen Konzerte früher, um einen Auftritt der Pixies in der Nähe nicht zu verpassen. In einem Interview mit dem Rolling Stone sagte er zudem, Smells Like Teen Spirit sei der Versuch gewesen, einen Pixies-Song zu schreiben.Es gibt zahlreiche Coverversionen der Pixies und Tributealben: So coverten etwa OK Go den Song Gigantic und Mogwai Gouge Away auf dem Album Dig for Fire, Papa Roach spielten auf ihrem 2002er Album Lovehatetragedy ebenfalls Gouge Away ein und auf David Bowies Album Heathen ist seine Version des SongsCactus zu hören. Placebo schlossen mehrere Auftritte ihrer 2003er Tour mit dem Pixies-Song Where Is My Mind? ab. Frank Black war beim letzten Konzert von Placebo in Paris dabei, und sie spielten zusammen Where Is My Mind?. Where Is My Mind? wurde von Regisseur David Fincher für die Endsequenz des Films Fight Club ausgewählt, wodurch der Song zehn Jahre nach seinem Erscheinen eine ungeahnte Popularität erlangte.Auch in der letzten Folge der 4400 wurde das Lied abschließend gespielt, ebenso wird der Song bei VeronicaMars (Staffel 2, Episode 2) angespielt. Im Film Knock Knock mit Keanu Reeves in der Hauptrolle läuft das Lied ebenfalls in der Endsequenz. In dem Film Unbreakable - Unzerbrechlich mit Bruce Willis ist der Song I´ve Been Tired von den Pixies zu hören, im Abspann des Films Dom Hemingway (mit Jude Law in der Hauptrolle) läuft der Song Debaser. Zur Fußball WM 2010 in Südafrika nutzte Visa Inc. den Pixies Song Isla de Encanta für ihren Werbespot.

It was a time of cold wars and colder waves of synthesized harmonics making their way into homes, whilst a wild and wide-eyed youth soaked up influences that would define a unique generation. Rexx and Eric grew up here, amidst the melancholy tones of DMode and the militaristic chants of F242 and NE. Two suburban teens, wrapped in all the angst of a world awry, drawn to the distant sounds of Europe's New Wave. Arkana took up the fight early, gigging at local clubs before taking to the college radio airwaves of Syracuse University's WERW in 1987. This initial step behind the curtain led to a 10+ year professional career in college radio and club DJ promotions. Here he scored numerous number one records on College Music Journal's RPM Electronic Music Charts and worked with nearly every label of note in the goth/industrial/electronic scene, including Wax Trax!, Nettwerk, Nothing, Interscope and a large line up of audio indies long since dead and gone. Over a nearly thirty year career in the scene, Arkana has headlined Wave Gotik Treffen's Agra Halle as a DJ, hosted his own local origination alternative arts cable program (Back Alley), served as Managing Editor of the full color glossy international music magazine Interface, hosted the first ever Industrial discussion panel at CMJ's Music Marathon, featuring Wolfgang Flür and Genesis P-Orridge, and interviewed with Anderson Cooper on ABC News as an expert on goth culture in the wake of the shootings at Columbine. In 2003, Arkana stepped from the backstage to the front stage with the inception of his Bruderschaft collaborative project, which to date has united artists from such groups as VNV Nation, Covenant, Apoptygma Berzerk, Haujobb, Icon of Coil, Aesthetic Perfection, Assemblage 23, Beborn Beton, Imperative Reaction and more. In 2006, he teamed with fellow NYC DJ Dräcos von Strecker to form the harsh EBM outfit FGFC820, which has gone on to headline festivals from Moscow to Mexico City. Throughout, Arkana's love for simple 80s melodies and the forlorn melancholy of youthful angst never once subsided. It was during recording sessions for the short-lived (and memorably scantily-clad) Armor project that Arkana and Eldredge - who initially met a decade before at NYC's famous nightclub, The Bank - bonded over anachronistic sound palettes and the music of their youth. So began the infancy of Coldkill. Eldredge was no stranger to the electronic scene. His internationally-acclaimed Interface project blends different elements of various such styles into its own brand of melodic futurepop with a decidedly emotional edge. Eldredge originally founded the band in 1993 and has released a prolific amount of material in his own right since: The Artemis Complex debut album (1999), Angels in Disguise (2002), Beyond Humanity (2006), Destination Focus (2008), and Visions Of Modern Life (2009). Interface's sound has ranged from aggressive industrial (Frantic, Metalstorm) to dance floor anthems (Age of Computers, Wasted Time) to soft ballads rich in texture and ambience (The Softest Blade and Labyrinth). Together, Arkana and Eldredge provide Coldkill with an aura of melodic melancholia reminiscent of the music that shaped their formative years. Unlike many of their myriad minimal or synth wave contemporaries, Coldkill has imposed strict self-restraints on their audio arsenal, limiting themselves to the sole employment of sounds that existed during the epoch they seek to emulate. If the native instrument wasn't available then, it's outside the scope of the project. The result is a very minimal approach - bereft of modern-day multi-tracking or slick production tricks - that evokes in many listeners a sense of nostalgia unique unto itself. The band's art direction, led by well-known Washington, D.C. graphic designer Vladimir McNeally and featuring the exclusive photography of Mexican artist Leslie Monreal, similarly dispatches with the heavy handed branding agendas of many new popular acts in favor of a return to the subtle black and white metaphors of 80s-era coldwave and goth. Many have already noted the band's limited output (two self-released digital 12s via bandcamp - I'm Yours and Invisible - comprise the Coldkill catalog to date) and offered up their support. Leading scene ezine, I Die: You Die has thrice featured the band on their regular Tracks recommendations, proclaiming: good stuff somewhere in the neighbourhood of some of the excellent melancholy synthpop we were hearing in the early days of the millennium it's cool to hear Rexx finding his way to a new vocal style that's all his own we've already received two excellent maxi-singles from (the) moody synthpop project bits like this which confirm the downcast yet slinky mode Coldkill seems to be thriving in. Andi Harriman - Village Voice contributor, scene historian and author of The Postpunk Project: Some Wear Leather, Some Wear Lace has written: (Coldkill) pays homage to the catchy, sticky sweet sadness of songs from our new wave record collections: the familiar favorites that console us when we need a good cry. (Their music) is a testament to their placement within the ancestry of synthpop: saluting the past while securing relevancy for the future. Meanwhile, Adam at A Model of Control raves: There is something wonderfully cool and detached in what Coldkill are doing, channeling the best moments of Covenant in particular. There are the distant, controlled vocals, precise drum programming and nagging synth hooks that come together to produce track after track of brilliant, post-futurepop. I'm really quite excited to hear the album now, as there has been nothing I haven't liked about their material so far. Finally, videographer Lüke Haughwøut, of Mechanical Harvest and COMA Music Magazine, described the band's sound uniquely as: it's like rediscovering an old band you'd never heard of before, or making out with your high school girlfriend all over again. The band - recently signed to San Francisco (via Germany) indie COP International Records - is currently putting the finishing touches on their full length debut, Distance by Design, which Arkana describes as a catalog of love songs for loves lost. Buck-Tick is a Japanese rock band consisting of five members: Atsushi Sakurai on vocals, Hisashi Imai on guitars, backing vocals, noises and theremin, Hidehiko Hoshino on guitars and backing vocals, Yutaka Higuchi on bass, and Yagami Toll on drums. They scored several hits in their early career, but were launched to international attention in 1986 when movie director/writer John Hughes borrowed their song title "Pretty in Pink" for his movie of the same name. Nix (guitar/vocals), Lance Romance (bass/vocals) and Chris Brief (drums/vocals). The group was formed in 2000 in Seattle, Washington. They play punk music common to the Pacific Northwest independent punk / new wave scene, influenced by acts such as Buzzcocks, The Undertones and The Adverts. They released their first full length, Hit After Hit, in October 2000 via Dirtnap Records. The band was courted by and reportedly signed with major label Interscope Records following the release of 2002's Off the Charts, but the deal fell through. The Briefs surfaced on California's BYO Records with the release of 2004's Sex Objects and the reissue of their Dirtnap-era full lengths. They most recently released Steal Yer Heart in 2005. The Briefs have released a prolific number of 7" singles in their career for a number of small independent labels.
