"The Sextet, one of Dvorák's finest chamber works, makes an excellent pairing with the double-bass Quintet ... a striking contrast to the Sextet's expansive richness. The Nash Ensemble are well recorded and play with refined expression while attacking the brilliant, quasi-orchestral music in the two finales with force and spirit." (Gramophone)
Many people associate the name Michael Nyman primarily with the soundtrack for Jane Campion’s film “The Piano”, but that fails to do justice to this highly successful British artist. The extensive oeuvre produced by composer, conductor and pianist Nyman includes not only film music but also opera, songs, ballet music and orchestral works and displays an impressive musical diversity. Anyone wishing to gain an impression of this versatility would have had an opportunity to experience the Michael Nyman Band in top form at this performance. The concert offers an exciting sample of Nyman’s past work and also presents the German premiere of The Musicologist Scores, marking the climax of an engagement with the music of Georg Friedrich Handel that began in the 1960s. Using an unusual combination of saxophone, flute, brass, piano, string quartet and bass guitar, The Michael Nyman Band is the composer’s preferred ensemble for trying out all his new works. All over the world the powerful, energetic playing of the band – developed under his leadership over a period of three decades – brings his works to sparkling life and has long since become a characteristic feature of his music.
A bass drum is a relatively large drum that produces a note of low definite or indefinite pitch. The bass drums are of variable sizes and are used in several musical genres (see usage below). Three major types of bass drums can be distinguished: the large orchestral bass drum, the smaller 'kick' drum, and the pitched bass drums. The type usually seen or heard in orchestral, ensemble or concert band music is the orchestral, or concert bass drum (in italian: gran cassa, gran tamburo). It is the largest drum of the orchestra. The 'kick' drum, struck with a beater attached to a pedal, is usually seen on drum kits. The third type, the pitched bass drum, is generally used in marching bands and drum corps. This particular type of drum is tuned to a specific pitch and is usually played in a set of three to five drums. The bass drum was imported from the Middle East. It is a direct descendant of the davul.
Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. Rachel''s is an American band that formed in Louisville, Kentucky in 1991. Former Rodan guitarist, Jason Noble, played music individually and refered to himself as Rachel''s but then began collaborating with now core members, violist Christian Frederickson, and pianist Rachel Grimes. The group''s work is strongly influenced by classical music, particularly inspired by the minimalist music of the late 20th century, and its composition reflects this. While the trio forms the core part of the band, the group''s recordings and performances feature a varying ensemble of musicians, who play a range of string instruments (including viola and cello) in combination with piano, guitars, electric bass guitar, and a drum set that includes a large orchestral bass drum. A key influence on the music of Rachel''s is the music of the English composer Michael Nyman, whose music the group''s work resembles in both instrumentation and compositional style.
High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles! Ruby Vroom was Soul Coughing's 1994 (see 1994 in music) debut album. The album's sound is a mixture of sample-based tunes (loops of Raymond Scott's "Powerhouse" on "Bus to Beelzebub", Toots & the Maytals, Howlin' Wolf, The Andrews Sisters, and The Roches on "Down To This," and a loop of sampler player Mark De Gli Antoni's orchestral horns on "Screenwriters Blues" among others), guitar based tunes like "Janine," "Moon Sammy," and "Supra Genius." and jazzy, upright-bass-fueled songs that often slyly quoted other material--the theme from "Courageous Cat" on "Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago," Thelonious Monk's "Misterioso" on "Casiotone Nation," and Bobby McFerrin's cover of Joan Armatrading's "Opportunity" on "Uh, Zoom Zip."
Preface The emphasis of the present etudes is on systematic exercises for the left hand. The lower positions demanded above all in orchestral playing, and the accompanying physical effort required, are consciously employed here in many variants and offer outstanding practice material. At the beginning, a slow, constant tempo should be paramount, the tempo then being increased with the aid of a metronome. I recommend these etudes as daily exercises for double bass players of all proficiency levels. Klaus Trumpf (Professor emeritus at the Colleges of Music in Berlin, Saarbrücken, and Munich) Instrumentation: double bass
