Johnny Cash, "The Man in Black", is among the most recognized and iconic vocal artists in the history of blues, country and gospel singing. During the second half of the 20th century, he produced a prolific and rarely-equaled career in the country genre as a singer, songwriter and guitarist, despite numerous struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. His trademark bass-baritone voice is instantly identifiable to listeners today, and his "parlando" style (combining an unaffected singing tone with a speech-like rhythm and pacing) has been taken up by the generation following his death in the early 21st century. Like Elvis Presley and other renowned artists who would later gather at Sun Records in Memphis during the 1950s, Johnny Cash emerged from the South and its blues and gospel traditions, and although his path to discovery took a more circuitous route, he came to join the biggest stars of his era, leaving a lasting mark on the industry and on American culture in the process. By the end of his life, Cash and his legendary voice of "emotional authority" had been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, in addition to numerous other honors. Cash accomplished all of this despite holding a life-long "distaste for the Nashville mainstream," which he believed was heading the wrong direction into ultra-commercialism. Nevertheless, over the span of a nearly 50 year career, Johnny Cash sold over 50 million albums and toured most of the world. While Cash's career spanned half a century and produced a voluminous amount of music, later generations have come to know Johnny Cash more for his rebellious attitude and his unrepentant way of life. Even as he was producing hits, he was burning himself up, admitting he "tried every drug there was to try", and on numerous occasions his alcohol and drug addictions nearl 1. Language: English. As lead singer of the band, Step Back Once, Sam Prichard was an up-and-coming country music star, his former careers as police officer and private investigator behind him. Recognized by one of the top talents in Nashville, it seemed the band might be on its way to a real recording career. But then Candy McAlester, their bass player, was arrested and charged with the murder of her ex-husband, her own son being the star witness against her. In desperation, the band turned to Sam to find the proof that she was innocent, and he returned to PI work to try to clear her name. Only then could he admit to himself that he'd been missing it, that he'd been craving it and the thrills and excitement that it brought along. The case took some surprising turns, and when the dust finally settled, Sam had learned one thing above everything else: being an investigator wasn't just something he had done, it was something that was part of him. No matter how things turned out on this case, Sam knew it wouldn't be his last. Or would it? 1. Language: English. Narrator: Mikael Naramore. The sonic glue that holds the project together is called The Good Road Band. The impressive lineup consists of legendary mandolin players Sam Bush, pedal steel innovator Russ Pahl, world famous electric guitar picker Guthrie Trapp, bass veteran Steve Mackey, cello virtuoso Nat Smith, and the groove of percussionist Josh Day. Combine that ensemble with Oates' warm and personal storytelling, and you have a one-of-a-kind experience that is authentic and unforgettable. The project originally began as a tribute to Oates' idol, Mississippi John Hurt . It evolved organically, during a series of Nashville recording sessions, into a unique, retrospective collection drawing from a wide range of Oates' musical influences. Asked about the style and sound of Arkansas, he say's , It's like Dixieland dipped in bluegrass and salted with Delta blues. The title track is propelled by a driving production that frames evocative images of the mist rising off the mighty Mississippi River and the expansiveness of the cotton fields in America's heartland. With the essence of roots music at its core, vintage and modern recording techniques are woven throughout the album. With this incredible band, Oates shines a light on popular songs from America's past long before the birth of rock 'n' roll. TRACKS: 1. Anytime 2. Arkansas 3. My Creole Belle 4.
