An oral history of the UK's soundsystem culture, featuring interviews with Dubmaster Dennis Bovell, Skream, Youth, Norman Jay MBE, Adrian Sherwood, Mala, and others. In the years following the arrival of the Windrush generation, the UK's soundsystem culture would become the most important influence on contemporary pop music since rock and roll. Pumped through towering, home-built speakers, often directly onto the thronged streets of events like the Notting Hill Carnival, the pulsating bass lines of reggae, dub, rave, jungle, trip hop, dubstep, and grime have shaped the worlds of several generations of British youth culture but have often been overlooked by historians obsessed with swinging London, punk, and Britpop. This oral history, consisting of new interviews conducted by respected dance music writer Joe Muggs, and accompanied by dramatic portraits by Brian David Stevens, presents the story of the bassline of Britain, in the words of those who lived and shaped it. Features interviews with Dubmaster Dennis Bovell, Norman Jay MPE, Youth, Adrian Sherwood, Skream, Rinse FM's Sarah Lockhart and many others.

In Listen to This, Alex Ross, the music critic for The New Yorker, looks both backward and forward in time, capturing essential figures and ideas in classical-music history, as well as giving an alternative view of recent pop music that emphasizes the power of the individual musical voice in whatever genre. Ross combines a selection of his New Yorker essays with new material that will serve as an introduction to some basic classical-music concepts and figures and will give an alternative view of recent pop music. It will demonstrate the essential equality of great musical creators in whatever genre. It begins with 'Listen to This', his most famous New Yorker essay, an autobiographical account of his early passion for classical music and belated discovery of pop music in college. It sets forth the themes of the book as a whole: how classical music can become a vital part of wider contemporary culture, how it can survive and even prosper in the face of proclamations of its decline. There follows a new essay tracing the history of the chaconne, a dance form based on a descending bass line, which originated as an erotic Afro-Caribbean dance in the 16th century, then migrated to Europe and inspired such Baroque masterpieces as Bach's Chaconne in D minor, and later found echoes in the bass lines both of 20th-century classical masterpieces and African-American blues. Led Zeppelin's 'Dazed and Confused' and Bob Dylan's 'Simple Twist of Fate', among other songs, extend the principle. This chapter develops, in a less personal way, the themes of 'Listen to This', and serves as a kind of whirlwind tour of five centuries of music history. Third in the introductory section is 'The Record Effect', an account of technology's impact on pop and classical music. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Alex Ross. House is the first descendant of disco. While Black and Hispanic communities were jamming and party DJs spinning records, a new birth of rhythm gave way to music lovers from Chicago and New York in the form known as house music.Developed in Chicago's underground dance club culture in the early 1980s, house music began as DJs spinning in the gay subculture altered the pop-like disco dance tracks to give them a more mechanical beat and deeper bass lines. As well, these DJs began to mix synth pop, dub reggae, rap, and even jazz into their tracks. The first pioneers of house music were Chicago DJ and record producer Frankie Knuckles, Chicago acid-house electronic music group Phuture, Tennessee DJ and producer Mr. Fingers, and US-born, UK-based singer Kym Mazelle.House music quickly spread to other American cities such as Detroit, New York City, Baltimore, and Newark - all of which developed their own regional house scenes. Today, house music is worldwide and continues to dominate most club scenes and has expanded beyond its subculture beginning. 1. Language: English. Narrator: David Sadzin. Bob Marley: The Life and Legacy of Reggae's Glo...

We don't have education, we have inspiration; if I was educated I would be a damn fool. (Bob Marley) "If there remains any magic, it is music." (Bob Marley) In terms of raw popularity, Bob Marley sold over 20 million albums in a brief career that took him around the globe as, "[T]he first international superstar from the so-called third world", but the journey from anonymity within his own culture to reigning as, "[T]he defining figure of Jamaican music" was a circuitous and dangerous one. After leaving home at age 14, Marley's street skills helped him, "[G]ain a foothold in Jamaica's chaotic music industry while skillfully navigating politically partisan violence that abounded in Kingston through the 70s." His exaltation of the reggae form, couched in the Rastafari, became an instrument of order and a haven for otherwise directionless youth in Kingston and other communities of Jamaica. Beginning with the more lighthearted ska style, Marley drew fellow Jamaicans as kindred spirits by adding social commentary to the lyrics. As these popular dance hits were infused with songs of faith, the weightier genre of reggae emerged. Marley would become, "[O]ne of the genre's most beloved artists." To the outer world, he is by far the most iconic individual associated with the form and the era. As the merely distractive elements of ska fell away, "[I]nto the slower, bass-heavy reggae sound", the accompanying depth of his message lifted him above being a mere entertainer, and his fellow Jamaican youth turned to him for social truths. 1. American Legends: The Life of Johnny Cash , Hör...

Johnny Cash, "The Man in Black", is among the most recognized and iconic vocal artists in the history of blues, country and gospel singing. During the second half of the 20th century, he produced a prolific and rarely-equaled career in the country genre as a singer, songwriter and guitarist, despite numerous struggles with alcohol and drug addiction. His trademark bass-baritone voice is instantly identifiable to listeners today, and his "parlando" style (combining an unaffected singing tone with a speech-like rhythm and pacing) has been taken up by the generation following his death in the early 21st century. Like Elvis Presley and other renowned artists who would later gather at Sun Records in Memphis during the 1950s, Johnny Cash emerged from the South and its blues and gospel traditions, and although his path to discovery took a more circuitous route, he came to join the biggest stars of his era, leaving a lasting mark on the industry and on American culture in the process. By the end of his life, Cash and his legendary voice of "emotional authority" had been inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame, the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Rockabilly Hall of Fame, in addition to numerous other honors. Cash accomplished all of this despite holding a life-long "distaste for the Nashville mainstream," which he believed was heading the wrong direction into ultra-commercialism. Nevertheless, over the span of a nearly 50 year career, Johnny Cash sold over 50 million albums and toured most of the world. While Cash's career spanned half a century and produced a voluminous amount of music, later generations have come to know Johnny Cash more for his rebellious attitude and his unrepentant way of life. Even as he was producing hits, he was burning himself up, admitting he "tried every drug there was to try", and on numerous occasions his alcohol and drug addictions nearl 1. Language: English.
